Our Cornwall Mediation Services Have Helped

This was a workplace dispute between two teachers. One slightly senior than the other. The complainant took his roles very seriously and always tried to carry out his duties in a professional and conscientious manner. However, by the end of a summer term he became so demoralised, felt  professionally undermined and ignored that he was too unwell to continue.

The events that led to this were as follows, given no professional autonomy or respect. Prior to his employment at the school, he had delivered training in his field to hundreds of teachers both nationally and internationally and was a highly regarded and respected professional. But here he was given a very limited role to play in subject improvement.

He alleged that he was rarely asked for his opinion or advice. Despite this he tried his best to support colleagues who were struggling with new initiatives and always led by example in his own classroom practice. If given the opportunity to carry out any staff CPD he claimed his input was micro-managed to such an extent that it caused him great professional embarrassment and diminished his standing with his colleagues.

For example, he had identified that the teachers would benefit from training on a particular subject. But immediately prior to delivering this training the complained took him to one side and told him what he should say. What examples he should use and even what he should write on the flip chart.

Throughout the delivery of the session, she sat at the back of the room and continually interrupted with her own examples or asked him to make additional points.

This amongst other issues were of great concern. The complained advised she was not doing anything of the sort, and in fact, all she did was try to mentor and support him. Who had issues with authority and hierarchy.

The mediation took place in person, took five hours and an amicable agreement was made.
